2. What WhatTheDelta does

WhatTheDelta is a browser-based text comparison tool. It compares an original and a revised version of a text directly in your browser.

The comparison itself runs locally on your device. The text you paste into the comparison fields is not uploaded, stored, or transmitted to our servers as part of the comparison workflow.

No user account is required to use the tool.

3. Purposes and legal bases of processing

We process personal data only to the extent necessary to provide the website and operate it securely.

This includes:

  • providing the website and delivering its content
  • enabling the browser-based comparison interface
  • ensuring security, stability, and abuse prevention
  • storing language and interface preferences
  • maintaining technical operation and troubleshooting where necessary

The legal bases are:

  • Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR where processing is necessary to provide the requested service or website functionality
  • Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR where processing is necessary for our legitimate interests in secure, stable, and efficient website operation

4. Comparison content

The text you compare in WhatTheDelta is processed locally in your browser.

This means:

  • the comparison content is not sent to our servers as part of the comparison process
  • we do not store the compared text in a database
  • we do not use the comparison content for analytics, profiling, marketing, or AI training
  • the current comparison state remains only in your browser memory for the active session, unless your browser itself retains local state

WhatTheDelta is designed as a privacy-first utility. The actual comparison happens client-side.

5. Hosting and technical delivery

Our website is hosted and delivered through infrastructure providers that process technical data required to display the site securely and reliably.

When you access the website, technical request data may be processed automatically. This may include in particular:

  • IP address
  • date and time of the request
  • requested URL and path
  • browser and device information
  • operating system
  • referrer URL
  • protocol and status information
  • security-related request metadata

This processing is necessary to deliver the website, maintain availability, detect abuse, and protect the service against attacks or misuse. Our hosting provider may act as a processor for this technical delivery data.

Hosting provider: Vercel Inc.

Primary hosting region: Frankfurt, Germany (fra1)

6. Cookies and local storage

We do not use marketing or advertising cookies for WhatTheDelta.

We only use storage that is technically necessary or functionally helpful for the operation of the website and the user interface.

This may include:

  • NEXT_LOCALE – stores the selected language for localized content and routes
  • whatthedelta-theme (cookie and/or localStorage) – stores the selected theme preference and helps prevent interface flicker on return visits

These storage items are used to remember interface settings and improve usability.

7. Recipients and processors

Personal data may be disclosed only where necessary for technical operation, legal compliance, or protection of our legitimate interests.

Recipients or categories of recipients may include:

  • hosting and infrastructure providers
  • technical service providers involved in secure website delivery
  • authorities or third parties where disclosure is legally required

The comparison content itself is not shared with processors as part of the comparison workflow because it is processed locally in the browser.

8. International data transfers

The comparison itself runs locally in your browser.

However, technical website delivery may involve providers located outside the European Economic Area or providers using infrastructure outside the EEA. Where this is the case, appropriate safeguards are used where required by law, such as Standard Contractual Clauses or other lawful transfer mechanisms.

9. Retention

The compared text is not stored on our servers as part of the comparison workflow.

Technical delivery data is retained only for as long as necessary for security, technical operation, and legal compliance, unless a longer retention period is required or justified by law.

Language and theme preferences remain on your device until they expire, are changed, or are deleted by you.

10. Your rights

Under the GDPR, you have the following rights, subject to the applicable legal requirements:

  • right of access (Art. 15 GDPR)
  • right to rectification (Art. 16 GDPR)
  • right to erasure (Art. 17 GDPR)
  • right to restriction of processing (Art. 18 GDPR)
  • right to data portability (Art. 20 GDPR)
  • right to object (Art. 21 GDPR)

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.

11. No obligation to provide comparison content

You are not required to provide comparison text to us, because the text comparison itself runs locally in your browser.

If you choose to use the tool, you decide which content you paste into it and do so on your own responsibility.

12. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy where legal, technical, or operational requirements change.
